Juice cleansing is a controversial topic within our community
Their is a lack of scientific evidence to support its possible benefits. 99% of the time what gets promoted on media are the personal experiences of a few. This is done mainly as marketing to attract you, the customer.
What is a juice cleanse?
Consuming only juices or other liquids for several days.
Causes weight loss.True, you’ll lose weight but its not just bodyfat. You lose water & salts as well. The loss in body fat is due to the severe restriction of calories. Such a restriction can be done through food aswell but neither are sustainable and should not be promoted because it further adds to the misconceptions about healthy lifestyle and eating.
Improves gut health. This actually has some merit. In one study (Health benefit of vege/fruit juice-based diet: Role of microbiome) published in Scientific Reports. Researchers asked 20 healthy participants to consume only 6 bottles of different juices a day for 3 days. At the end of it, they found that ” the juice cleanse increased the amounts of some health-promoting bacteria and lowered the number of bacteria that cause illness.” However in another study, done by customizable probiotics company (thryve inside) they identified similar improvements can be noticed even having 1 juice a day alonside your regular meals (hopefully healthy)
What to be cautious of?
If you have diabetes, stay away from juice cleanses.
Drinking large quantities of juices for people with kidney disease.
There is very little clinical evidence to support detoxification. The ones that do, had flawed methodologies and small sample sizes.
This area does deserve more attention so that the we can make a more rotational decision on following these cleanses.
Juice cleanses, is it necessary? Nope. The promotion of it at this scale i believe adds to the misconceptions in our space.
However, having a good combination of fruits juiced or cold pressed is a good addition to a healthy balanced diet and if you are buying make sure you find a reliable organic store.
